What this word counter does
The tool analyzes your text in real time and shows eight metrics at once: total words, total characters, characters excluding spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, estimated reading time, and estimated speaking time. Every count updates as you type — no "Analyze" button needed.
How counts are calculated
- Words — contiguous runs of letters, digits, or apostrophes. Matches Word-style counting: "don't" is one word, "state-of-the-art" is four.
- Characters — every Unicode code point including spaces, punctuation, and emoji.
- Characters (no spaces) — excludes space, tab, and newline characters.
- Sentences — runs separated by
. ! ?followed by whitespace or end of text. Approximate for abbreviations. - Paragraphs — blocks separated by one or more blank lines.
- Lines — hard line breaks in your input.
- Reading time — words ÷ 200 wpm (adult silent reading).
- Speaking time — words ÷ 130 wpm (audio narration pace).
